ENN Solar’s large thin-film modules receive TÜV and IEC certification

Image
As the first Chinese thin-film manufacturer to produce tandem junction cells on a production line, ENN Solar Energy Co., Ltd. has passed another milestone with its receipt of certification from TÜV InterCert for its tandem junction silicon thin-film solar modules. This certification confirms that the modules comply with the IEC’s requirements, and effectively passes the modules for sale in European and U.S. markets. With this TÜV Certificate, ENN solar becomes the first manufacturer in Asia to receive the certification for ultra-large size tandem junction silicon thin-film modules. The half- and quarter-size modules also received the certification, which concludes that all of ENN’s module sizes are in compliance with the requirements of IEC 61464 and IEC 61730. The 5.7m 2 modules were produced on its 60MW Applied Materials ‘SunFab’ line, ramp-up of which took place in March 2009. EEN Solar has aggressive plans to ramp manufacturing capacity to 500MW by 2011.

LG Display in Korea invests $40 million in pilot thin-film solar cell testing facility

Image
Focussing its research capabilities on the thin-film sector, LG Display is looking to the future of solar energy with its recent investment of 50 billion won ($40 million) in a pilot line and testing facility for solar cells. The pilot line will be built in LG’s Paju display complex in Korea later this year, while an outdoor test power generation facility will also be constructed at the site. The pilot line will enable the testing and research of thin-film solar cell efficiencies, with the company aiming to achieve an increase in the current energy conversion efficiency rate of 8% to 12% by 2010. Commercialization, planned for 2012, will occur when the research facility has raised the cells’ efficiency to 14%, enabling the manufacturing cost to be lowered to less than US$1 per watt. LG Display’s target market in this phase will be commercial applications buildings and public displays, graduating to solar cells for mobile displays, automobiles, and eventually to supplying cells for suc...

SoloPower certified for CIGS-based modules

Image
SoloPower today became the first US ANSI/UL 1703-certified manufacturer of flat-plate, CIGS based (copper indium gallium selenide) PC module. The Silicon Valley-based producer of thin-film solar photovoltaic cells and modules is well on the way to its goal of mass-producing PV modules. Intertek, an independent, multi-national product safety certification organization, granted the ETL certification. The product was tested to meet ANSI/UL 1703, the developed standard for safety flat-plate photovoltaic modules and panels. Being certified is an important technical and commercial achievement for SoloPower’s products in the US and Canada. The certification is an added third-party confirmation that the company’s PV modules conform to rigorous safety standards.

Photovoltaics industry capital spending set for recovery, says IC Insights

Image
A new report from market research firm, IC Insights highlights the expected recovery in capital spending within the photovoltaics industry as the market recovers over the next few years. The market research firm claims that spending on manufacturing plants, equipment and materials in both the crystalline (c-Si) and thin film sectors has not declined as much as PV manufacturers had wanted in light of the slump in demand and difficult financial conditions, restricting project finance for solar installations. IC Insights said in the report that it was late in 2008 that major PV manufacturers started to make capital spending cuts as the scale of the decline in demand became clear. Although many significantly reduced spending budgets for 2009 compared to 2008, long-lead times and previously planned expansions already taking place meant that many manufacturers could not abruptly halt all expenditures. Although 2008 was a record year for PV installations, production capacity was already growi...

New Taiwanese green energy bill

Image
Taiwan’s government reports that it has passed a bill on renewable energy that is expected to attract Taiwan $30 billion (US $937 million) worth of investment. Parliament approved the measure on 13 June 2009, which is aimed at adding between 6,500 and 10,000MW of installed energy from renewable to Taiwan’s current 2,287MW (5.8%) over the next 20 years. Before this bill passed, providers were obligated to sell electricity to state-run Taiwan Power at Taiwan $2 per kilowatt-hour, compared with the Taiwan $8 they recommended. The bill is part of the government’s plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to 2000 levels by 2025.The government now plans to offer incentives and loosen regulations on renewable energy providers, in addition to creating a pricing mechanism for various sources of solar or wind energy. United Daily news estimates that the bill will induce over Taiwan $30 billion in investment in the first year and create more than 10,000 jobs. Needless to say, industry watchers wel...

the biggest thin film PV module developed

Image
Applied Materials has received International Electrotechnical Commission certification for both the single- and tandem-junction versions of the 5.7 m2 solar photovoltaic modules produced by its SunFab thin film line. Tests run by TÜV InterCert confirmed that the large-area amorphous-silicon panels meet IEC standards 61646 and 61730."Applied’s 5.7 m2 modules are four times bigger than anything we've ever tested," said Feridoon Sergizzarea, president/CEO of TÜV InterCert. "We made modifications to the laboratory and added equipment to enable us to test modules this large. Creating a PV product of this size that can pass all of the IEC tests while maintaining mechanical and electrical integrity is an impressive feat of engineering. "The quarter-sized 1.4 m2 modules produced on the SunFab TFPV line received IEC certification earlier this year. However, a full-size 5.7 m2 panel designed to maintain high power output while subjected to years of exposure to sunlight, ...

SCHOTT Solar and IMEC team on crystalline cell R&D targeting 20% efficiencies and ultra-thin wafers

Image
In a planned three-year effort to reduce the cost of producing crystalline silicon solar cells by reducing and the amount of Si/Watt that is needed by half and boost conversion efficiencies to approximately 20%, SCHOTT Solar has joined IMEC's newly launched silicon photovoltaics industrial affiliation program (IIAP). The program is expected to see silicon solar cell manufacturers, equipment and material suppliers collaborate and share intellectual property, talent, risk and costs involved in the project. “In the highly dynamic market of solar power, short time to market for new products is essential,” noted Dr. Martin Heming, Chief Executive Officer at SCHOTT Solar AG. “Therefore, SCHOTT Solar is pleased to announce that the company has joined the high-level IIAP R&D program at IMEC, the leading research institute in the field. We support IMEC's ambitious goals and their work towards creating success their partners." IMEC's program will explore both wafer-based bu...
