Hyundai, Kia Aim to Boost 2010 Sales by 17%

The auto group, which sold a record 4.63 million vehicles last year, is targeting sales to rise to 5.4 million in 2010, Chairman Chung Mong-koo said in a New Year's speech to employees, Monday. ``Our teamwork helped turn a crisis into an opportunity when the global auto industry was at its darkest,'' said Chung, who recently ranked as U.S. magazine Motor Trend's 2009 third most influential figure in the auto industry. LG Electronics to start production on 120MW solar-cell line in January

LG Electronics will begin production next month at its 120MW crystalline-silicon solar cell manufacturing line in Gumi, South Korea, about 200 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The company said it will open a second line in 2011, which will increase total output to 240MW. LG has invested nearly $187 million in the business. “LG's intention is to become a global player in the world’s solar industry through a combination of our mass production expertise and strict quality control system,” said Kwan-shik Cho, VP of LG's solar business team. “While we recognize this is a crowded playing field, LG has the necessary skills, know-how, and business strategy to make this a profitable venture for the long-term.” The company is also working on thin-film PV technologies. The nation's top telecom regulator approved the planned merger of three telecom units of LG Group, Monday. But the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) plans to slash policy benefits as the local share by the single entity has already exceeded 13 percent ― the level which is regarded as one of a dominant market player, KCC said in a statement. "We gave the green light for the merger as it will benefit consumers and it is highly unlikely the merger will limit competition in the local telecom market," a KCC spokesman said. "As a result of the merger, the nation's three telecom players including SK Telecom and KT are expected to equally compete with their own fixed- and wireless-based products," the official added. South Korean polysilicon manufacturer OCI to invest $858.5 million in new plant

In a bid to join the leading global producers of polysilicon, South Korean chemical manufacturer OCI plans to restart construction on a new poly plant inside its existing facility in Gunsan in January. The company (the former DC Chemical) will invest 1 trillion Won (approximately $858.5 million) in its Phase 3 (P3) factory, which will have an annual manufacturing capacity of 10,000 metric tons when commercial production begins in 2011, bringing its total annual poly capability to 27,000 metric tons. OCI, the only company in Korea with its own Siemens process-based polysilicon manufacturing technology, has already built the 6500-metric-ton P1 plant (completed in December 2007) and the 10,500-metric-ton P2 expansion (completed in July 2009). "We've started shipping the panels to a global PC manufacturer," Claire Ohm, a company spokeswoman, said Thursday. The official, however, declined to give further specific financial details such as the deal volume or LG's next targets for the panels. LG said the new product was a 23-inch 3D monitor LCD panel for use with shutter glasses that delivers full HD resolution. POSCO Completes Steel Pipe Plant in US

POSCO, who is the largest steel maker in Korea, announcement Tuesday it has completed construction of a new plant in the U.S. to produce pipes for oil transportation in a joint project with a U.S. company and another Korean maker. The $135 million plant in Pittsburgh will be operated by United Spiral Pipe (USP), a joint venture of POSCO, U.S. Steel Corp. and SeAH Steel Corp., and will produce 270,000 tons of high-quality pipes annually, the company said in a statement. The pipe factory was built next to the USS-POSCO Industries steel plant, another joint venture between POSCO the U.S. steel titan. U.S. Steel and POSCO each own 35 percent of USP, with SeAH owning the remaining 30 percent. For its production of pipes with diameters ranging from 24 to 64 inches, U.S. Steel and POSCO will each provide 50 percent of the steel for the factory, while SeAH will supply its expertise in making spiral welded pipes, POSCO said. LG Display to Build LCD Plant in China

LG Display, the world's second-largest flat-screen maker, inked a contract to build an eight-generation liquid crystal display (LCD) plant in Guangzhou, China, company officials said Tuesday. The company will invest $4 billion in its new manufacturing plant, which will begin operations in 2012 and eventually acquire an annual capacity of 120,000 LCD substrates. To establish the factory, LG Display agreed to establish a $1.3-billion joint venture with the city of Guangzhou. LG Display will own 70 percent of the new company, while Guangzhou city and a yet-to-be-determined Chinese television maker will share the remaining 30-percent stake. The South Korean company has been investing heavily in the solar cell business over the past five years, looking to invest 220 billion won (about $185 million) to complete two solar cell production lines by the end of 2010. LG claims to be the world's first company to get third-party certification for a solar cell testing facility. Advancement Achieved in Next-Generation Solar Cell

A team of South Korean researchers suggested a new approach that enables dramatic improvement in the low-cost, thin-film solar cells now being developed in laboratories around the world. The new technique could improve the power conversion rates of dye-sensitized solar cells by more than 50 percent of the current level once commercialization is made. Dye-sensitized solar cells, a relatively new class of thin-film solar cell, are considered extremely promising as they are easier to manufacture and use cheaper materials than conventional solar technologies. They can also be engineered into flexible sheets, and are mechanically robust, requiring no protection from minor events like hail or tree strikes. However, improving efficiency has been a major issue. Significant advancement in dye-sensitized solar cells achieved

Researchers in South Korea have suggested a new approach to creating cost-effective and more efficient dye-sensitized solar cells, which will mean significant advancement in the thin-film market. So far in the development of this thin-film technique, researchers have faced one major setback; the efficiency of the cells has been half that of the more commonly used silicon-based cells. However, this new approach will improve the power consumption rates of dye-sensitized solar cells by at least 50%. Park Nam-gyu, a researcher from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), said his team has discovered a breakthrough method, which enables a sequential bonding of dyes in the thin, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) layers used in dye-sensitized solar cells.
